Teambuilding - The Commercial Challenge

Commercials give us a glimpse of a company’s culture and soul. They allow us to see into the organization from afar and find out what it stands for and what it believes. It gives us insight into the organization’s vision of who it is...

This session captures that insight, allowing us to explore a variety of team and group dynamics while capturing the essence of your organization. Using a hand-held digital video camera, a choice of playful props, and their own creativity and imagination, teams must create a sixty-second commercial highlighting an important aspect of your business vision, message or meeting theme. Team members are assigned different roles as they take on the job of director, scriptwriter, props manager, camera person, and actors.
Filming - “All quiet on the set”
Teams begin by going through a process of determining what they want to communicate and the best way to reach their target audience. This can create a wide range of responses from team members and creates interesting dynamics as ideas are shared, expanded upon, and dismissed. It is vital that team member's work effectively together to write a script, buy and develop props, create characters and costumes, develop the scene, rehearse and finally film the commercial.

They can be as creative as they wish – they just need to be sure to make it back in time to turn in their masterpiece. The Commercial Challenge rules require that teams shoot scene to scene with no editing allowed, which forces them to be concerned with flow, timing, quality, and initial strategy and design. Teams only get one shot at greatness! Teams must turn in their commercial before the allotted time runs out.

Successful teams seem to have a way of tapping into everyone’s talent and unleashing it. This activity allows us to explore:
  • How to maximize everyone’s involvement on a team
  • What are the key messages that the organization must communicate
  • The importance of taking calculated risks
  • What are the emotional appeals that will drive your business
  • How practice helps improve quality
  • Who are your customers and what do they want
  • How people relate to the organization as a whole
When the commercials have all been turned in, we showcase the efforts for everybody to see during the Commercial Challenge Film Festival. We create a DVD of all the films, which is then shown in a large festival-like atmosphere. We often have judges and critics as part of the show – adding in that extra special touch.

People laugh, they shout, they sometimes even give standing ovations – but they will always remember their Commercial Challenge experience.

Insights:
  • The Commercial Challenge creates an exciting atmosphere in which team members get to know each other on a different level and work together to focus on what it means to be part of this organization.
  • This session can focus people on the importance of tapping into everyone’s skills, taking the time to do things right the first time, and working through creative differences.
  • The event creates a milestone in an organizations collective memory. This can help connect people and allow them to work more effectively with one another.
Rave Review
“Thanks again for the excellent team building session you facilitated. I continue to get rave reviews from all who were present. I met with our president today and she reiterated what a great job your team did and how the event exceeded her expectations. The Sunrise Film Festival was truly a blast and truly stimulated our creative juices as well as helped bring us together as a team.”
