Teambuilding - Electronic Maze

Working through a process sometimes seems like working your way through a maze. This analogy is literally depicted in this event. Participants are placed in-groups of 12 to 25 and then randomly selected into two “teams.” These teams start at opposite ends of an electronic maze (9 x 6 carpet). The objective is to get everyone across the maze by way of a non-beeping path, which they find through trial and error.

The Maze allows participants to overcome common process improvement challenges in a non-threatening, engaging and fun environment. The insights that they make doing the exercise are carried back to the workplace where they are implemented.

Process:
The facilitator starts off by separating the group into two teams who start off at opposite ends of the maze. The facilitator then gives an overview of the objective that is: To get everyone through the maze quickly with as few penalties as possible.

The rules for the event are as follows:
  • Can move only to an adjacent square
  • Only one person on carpet at a time from each side
  • Must keep path in your head
  • No talking
  • After a person steps on a beeping square, they must retrace their exact path off the maze
A three-minute planning strategy is allowed at the beginning where teams are allowed to talk to each other. After the three-minute strategy session is over, the fun begins as teams find the non-beeping path through trial and error. Financial penalties are given for each broken rule. Finally, teams realize they must work together in order to accomplish their objective of getting everyone through the maze.

This powerful event works on many different levels. Team skills surrounding communication, support, encouragement, and risk and reward are all brought out. Individuals also realize that they must work together in order to accomplish the task. We would debrief around team and service excellence, focusing on how these key elements allowed them to work their way through the maze. The analogies individuals make to work become a powerful learning tool in creating a more productive workplace.

Insights:
The Electronic Maze provides organizations with a robust activity that helps provide key insights surrounding:
  • Necessity of open and honest communication
  • Importance of challenging pre-conceived ideas and paradigms
  • Need to develop feedback methods
  • Leadership qualities in a stressful, unfamiliar situation
  • Continued need to evaluate and explore new sometimes non-apparent options
  • Power of teamwork and celebration
  • Cooperation versus competition
