“Gold has been discovered on Mars!” So begins The Quest for the Red Planet –
a simulation that has teams race each other across the Solar System to be the first people to mine the Red Gold of Mars and make it back alive. In today’s fast paced world, people have to use all the resources they have on hand in order to compete and win. They need to work with each other, gather information, set up a strategy, and then implement that strategy in order to achieve success. This event takes teams through an exciting simulation that requires all of that and more! The team’s goal is to make it to Mars and return home alive with as much of the Red Gold as possible. The object is to maximize their return on investment.
Process:
Each team has a laptop that is used as the command center for their expedition. This is where they get video news reports, weather and travel updates, expedition information, and various tips and hints throughout the event.
Teams must quickly organize and mount an expedition to the Red Planet making important tactical decisions on:
– The type of ship they will use
– The amount of information they will gather prior to lift off
– The amount of food and water they will bring
– The type of mining equipment they will buy
– The safety and defense systems they want
Teams work through constantly changing challenges (volcanic eruptions, Martian attacks, solar flares, gold price fluctuations, food shortages and severe weather) throughout the event. How they respond as a team will determine the fate of their expedition.
How teams work together will ultimately determine if they complete the mission or die trying. The event provides a framework in which team members need to:
set a strategy on how to achieve their goal
keep focused on the team’s objective in a highly chaotic environment
communicate effectively with one another
work with other teams while competing against them
interpret vague or conflicting information
make key decisions without knowing all the facts
respond to a constantly changing environment that brings new challenges and issues
In the end, the teams that delegate, share information, analyze the situation, keep a positive attitude, think creatively and react quickly with a plan will be the winners.
